A Love Letter to the Marae Kitchen
He's trained in kitchens across the world, but the bro from The Bear ain't ready for the marae kitchen...
First things first, you don’t need to have seen, nor know, what ‘The Bear’ is to get this comic. It’s more of a celebration of the marae kitchen.
But if you haven’t seen The Bear, essentially it’s a comedy-drama about an award-winning chef who returns to his hometown of Chicago to take on large amounts of debt to open a stressful, high-end restaurant/hostile work environment instead of going to therapy to deal with his trauma.
A year ago I had the idea of a New Zealand version of the show, maybe the dude training in a fish and chip shop, an award-winning pie shop, or a Cheapies Chicken. But after having some drinks with some pals last month bonding over the marae kitchen, and some added help from stories shared by followers on Instagram, it all began to click.
