Introducing my new book, 'Slices of Heaven: Uniquely Kiwi Comics about Aotearoa'
A new print collection of warm and witty comics celebrating the DNA of Aotearoa
Earlier this year, I was facing a bit of burnout and disillusionment creating Yeehawtheboys content. Week after week, researching and making comics on bleak subject matters started taking its toll. Battling a shadowban on Instagram only added to the frustration, and I began to wonder if the comics were helpful in the current political climate, or deepening the divide that has formed over the past few years.
So I decided to flip the script a little and take the time to make comics that focused on the things I love about Aotearoa, that are uniquely ours, celebrating our quirks, institutions, identity, and shared experiences.
The result was me having the most fun I’ve had creating comics thus far. The research deep dives were fun, and I got to chat with friends, family, and strangers about the experiences that tie us together, all while having a good, healthy laugh. Writing and drawing up each one has been a blast. I genuinely had a smile on my face with each one, and I can honestly say they’re something I’m incredibly proud of and easily the best work I’ve created.
After the third installment, I decided I wanted to collect the series into a small, easily consumable comic book (which also helped motivate me to finish the series). I will be releasing a couple of more stories included in the book in the next few months on Substack for paid subscribers while keeping a couple exclusive to the book (for the time being)
It’s a collection that I hope everyone can enjoy, and have a little laugh and relate to while being reminded of the things that unite us as a country. I couldn’t be more excited to share it with you.
Slices of Heaven: Uniquely Kiwi Comics about Aotearoa collects six main deep-dive comics, as well as a few smaller comics, on a wide breadth of uniquely Kiwi stalwarts, including the school pool, the Marae kitchen, Raro, the shed, the dairy, NZ hold music, and more to be revealed.
