The new and improved Bird of the Year for 2025!
An exclusive look at the new Bird of the year rules, direct from the desk of the Minister of Conservation Tama Potaka!
From the desk of Tama Potaka, Minister of Conservation of New Zealand:
To actively reflect this government’s approach to animal conservation, which most recently included the amendment to the Wildlife Act, which allows the Director-General of Conservation to permit companies to kill native animals if they get in the way of projects like roads, mines, or dams, we will also be making amendments to ‘Bird of the Year’ to better align with our current model.
Traditionally, the goal of the annual competition was to elect a New Zealand native "Bird of the Year" to help raise awareness of the conservation threats to many endangered native birds. But as I have previously stated, this is a fruitless effort, and attempting to save every native bird is too expensive.
So this year, we want to get the community behind our new approach to fast-tracking the extinction of our native wildlife by shaking up the Bird of the Year competition. We will provide you with a comprehensive list of native land where our generous donors want to mine, forest, and farm. You can select your personal favourite native bird and take out as many as you please, so the commercial activities can kick off!
Not only will this commercial activity bring more money into our economy (maybe, I haven’t checked how much goes offshore), but eliminating these seed-eating bottom feeders will also save this government a few extra dollars in the long run; it’s a win-win!
Be sure to save me a couple!

DARTZ ‘Money for Nothing’ Australian tour, and a love for Pass the Pigs.
DARTZ is closing off our European tour (which we are currently two weeks into, I’m writing this in the van on the way to Aarhus, Denmark) with a quick four-show stop in Australia! We will be hitting up Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, and Sydney!
This poster is inspired by DARTZ favourite game to play on tour: Pass the Pigs, a simple dice game that has been adapted using small pigs that are easy to travel with. If you aren’t familiar with the game, here is a simple video explaining the concept and rules.
It was a fun concept to adapt into a poster, I like having the dates at the forefront on the side for once, which in this instance have adapted the rule book of the game. We love the game so much that we immortalized it as matching tattoos during a day off in Italy. Here’s how we did it, and how we chose how they’d look:
But if you are in Australia, and want to catch a four-week tour tight DARTZ, then grab a ticket and come shake some booty and check out the fresh pig tats in person!
