Meanwhile, In Kea heaven...
Plus: I look inward on my output and I dish on a potential sequel to 'Slices of Heaven' ooooh! ahhhh!
Behind The Panels.
Look at this, it’s the second week where I have published more than once a week, a new record for me, or maybe, it’s a new outlook on life, maybe, I'm setting goals.
Mainly, I’ve found that creating more comics often improves my overall mental health. It’s keeping me off my phone, I’m actually seeing ideas through and not second-guessing them and throwing them aside (for example, I’ve had this kea heaven joke saved in my notes for nearly six months). Who knew finishing things would have such a positive impact?
My goal for July is to keep this up, publish two to three comics a week, and see what that results in. Better mental health? More ideas churning? So much possibility! Maybe even more subscribers to my Substack, and then I can start posting like a Substack influencer over on Notes (Twitter for Substack), like this guy:
I promise you that I will grow, to hone my craft, so I can one day have the confidence of this woman:
Maybe that’s how I’ll be pushing these comics on ‘Notes’ from now on. It’s marketing people! How else will I grow my niche audience of people who want to read comics about life and politics in New Zealand?!
Slices of Heaven 2?
Yes, I’ve been working on a few ideas for a couple of new comics/books. Who knows where they will end up, or when they will be released, but one is shaping up to be similar to my last book, Slices of Heaven.
As you may have noticed, I’ve posted a few new comics that have followed the theme of diving into a particular New Zealand-specific subject and dissecting it with a humorous view (I’ll link them at the end if you missed them). I’m actually working on a new one as we speak, here’s a little sneak peek: you’ll never guess how I will be tying this into a New Zealand topic, trust me:
But I figured I’d open it up to the floor, the readers, my much-appreciated Subscribers, and even unlock the comments to see if there’s any slices of New Zealand life you’d like to see me tackle next? Drop a comment below.
And if you haven’t yet grabbed a copy of Slices of Heaven, why not treat yourself to a copy of that as well? It’s great fireplace reading, I hear!
Have a great weekend!

Kea also love cheese, yoghurt, butter, ice cream - fatty foods. Lots of funny stories about them in Arthur’s Pass etc including one where the restaurant on the main road boarded up its doors and windows and owners went on holiday…a gang of kea got in through the cat flap, prized open the fridge and freezer doors (working collaboratively??) and decimated all the butter, cheese, ice cream etc. was quite a sight for owners on return. Plus I’ve seen them doing daylight robberies at the cafe across the road from restaurant - checking to see no cashier in sight, scuttling in on their legs, grabbing a pinky bar, scuttling back out, prizing it open, chowing down the chocolate and repeating the robbery within less than a few minutes!
Good content for another comic I think??
Lol re the music biopics esp the Dylan frame
